About

Driving the Circular Economy Through Coffee

ECOFFEE is an innovation project that seeks to transform spent coffee grounds into high-value resources, tackling one of the most relevant challenges of the circular bioeconomy in Europe.

Through reverse logistics, bio-based processing, and life cycle assessment, ECOFFEE develops solutions that turn coffee waste into sustainable, replicable, and economically viable products.

The project is part of CIRCULOOS under Horizon Europe, supporting the objectives of the European Green Deal, the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. ECOFFEE contributes particularly to Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, and Goal 13 on Climate Action.

With a one-year duration and a total budget of €256,451.25, ECOFFEE integrates digital circularity through Circuloos traceability tools, enabling transparent monitoring and transferability of its value chain.

The project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium: AZTI, Euskovazza, Fumihogar and the Finnova Foundation, combining scientific, industrial, technological, and communication capabilities to demonstrate a scalable and replicable model of circular innovation for the European coffee sector.
